Time Value of Money (Annuity)

Future Value of an Annuity
An annuity is a series of equal payments made at fixed intervals for a specified number of periods. If the payments occur at the end of each period, as they typically do, the annuity is called an ordinary or deferred annuity.

Equation 3
FVAn = PMT (FVIFAi,n)
Where
FVAn = The future value of an annuity over n periods
PMT = The payments at the end of each period
FVIFAi,n = Future value interest factor for a annuity

If you deposit $100 at the end of each year for three years in a savings account that pay 5 percent interest per year, how much will you have at the end of three years?

Spreadsheet Solution
In Excel, click the function wizard, Financial, FV, and OK to get the FV dialog box. Then, we would enter 0.05 for Rate, 3 for Nper, and -100 for Pmt (the payment is entered as a negative number to show that it is a cash outflow). We would leave PV blank because there is no initial payment, and we would leave Type blank to signify that payments come at the end of the periods. Then, we clicked OK, we would get the FV of the annuity, $315.25.

If payments are made at the beginning of each period, the annuity is an annuity due.

Equation 4
FVAn (Annuity due) = PMT (FVIFAi,n)(1+i)

For the annuity due, proceed just as for the ordinary annuity except enter 1 for Type to indicate that we now have an annuity due. Then, when you click OK, the answer $331.01 will appear.

Present Value of an Annuity
If the payments come at the end of each year, then the annuity is an ordinary annuity.

A Microfinance Path for Commercial Banks

A Microfinance Path for Commercial Banks

By Mohamad Nazirwan*)

In the recent years we have witnessed the flourishing of microfinance around the globe – particularly after the United Nation launched the International Year of Microcredit 2005. Perhaps, the greatest indication of this growing trend was when Professor Muhammad Yunus, the founder of Grameen Bank and the pioneer of microcredit for women was awarded a Nobel Prize. In many perspectives, microfinance has been proven an effective tool to support the Millennium Development Goals campaign in reducing the half number of poor people.

Microfinance has come a long way from its beginnings as a non-profit program to combat chronic poverty in developing countries. The best practice in the past was that the government created state owned banks to channel subsidized loans to farmers to produce food crops and many international NGOs gave charity to poor inhabitants in order to help them climb up from chronic poverty trap. Furthermore, microfinance gradually evolves from social intermediation to financial intermediation which adopts market mechanism and commercial practices. Surprisingly, this approach has worked well in the bottom of the pyramid (BOP) economy mainstream and it has generated good impact on the prosperity of low income households and the poor.

The presence of microfinance institutions in local community has successfully opened financial access to microentrepreneurs and under banked clients who need loans for working capital and investment. The spectrum of commercial microfinance also broadens through providing saving products, remittance and payment system to the entire society efficiently and profitably. A key feature of this approach is double bottom lines that are to seek profits and also to create social values. One of the best examples and also the pioneer of commercial microfinance is BRI-Unit microbanking system which developed over two decades ago, after BRI struggled with massive losses during the rice self sufficient program (Bimas).

Smithsonian-inspired Furniture collection

The Smithsonian collection from Bernhardt Furniture is based not only on pieces owned by the popular museums in Washington, D.C., but also on the structures themselves. The pattern in the glass front of a china cabinet, for instance, is based on a window in the Castle, the original museum dating to 1855.

The sleek and surprisingly contemporary Campeachy leather chair and ottoman is based on an early 19th-century piece that Thomas Jefferson discovered in New Orleans. The Legacy sleigh bed was inspired by a pictured discovered in the Cooper-Hewitt library of the Smithsonian, which houses books on the decorative arts.

FROM OLD FURNITURE TO GARDEN TREASURE

Beautifully-crafted garden benches and bird boxes catch the eyes of shoppers strolling along Newland Avenue in the sunshine.

The craftsmanship belies the price tags, causing many to stop to admire the work before heading inside the shop.

For a bargain price of £55, you can snap up a three-seater garden bench. Cube-shaped planters start at £8 while bird boxes cost the pocket money price of just £2, a fraction of the amount charged in DIY stores and garden centres.

If that’s not enough of a pull, the goods outside Recycling Unlimited have been made from reclaimed timber, broken furniture or old pallets, restored and brought back to life by a team of volunteers.

Unlike media-savvy supermarket chains and major companies, who herald the tiniest of environmental moves, Peter Rowson, of Recycling Unlimited, is quiet and unassuming about its ethos.

“We want to look after the environment,” he said. “We don’t think people should be burying so much stuff into the ground for future generations to live with.”

As well as helping the environment by preventing the discarded wood being sent to landfill sites, every piece has been made by long-term unemployed or people recovering from mental health problems such as depression.

Irish Furniture, Gutsy and Ebullient, in a Book and a Sale

Christie’s sale of English furniture on Monday in New York includes some 18th-century Irish antiques, each carefully notated in the catalog with a typically Irish winged-harp symbol. The harp is helpful, because it can be difficult to identify 18th-century Irish antiques.

Even experts become confused, but help is on the way. Yale University Press has just published “Irish Furniture,” by Desmond FitzGerald, an expert in Irish antiques, and James Peill, a furniture specialist at Christie’s New York. The book has been in the works for more than 40 years.

“In the 1960s, when I was a curator at the Victoria and Albert, there was practically no Irish furniture there,” Mr. FitzGerald said. “It was not regarded as having any importance, but I started buying it for myself.

Wicker furniture popular from ancient Egypt until now

Wicker furniture has been used since the ancient Egyptians, but most of today’s collectors are buying pieces made in the 1800s and 1900s.

In the early 1830s, a Boston grocer named Cyrus Wakefield was watching ships unpacking cargo. Bundles of rattan wrapping were discarded. He thought it might be suitable as a material for furniture, especially chair seats. After experimenting, he developed braided wicker furniture and even had ships import more cane and rattan. His Wakefield Rattan Co. was founded in 1855.

Heywood Brothers, founded in 1861 by Levi Heywood, was the largest chair company in the United States by 1870. The company began making wicker furniture in 1875 using rattan bought from Wakefield. The two companies merged in 1897.

Many styles of wicker furniture were made, including Victorian, Arts and Crafts, and Art Deco. Plant stands, easels, fishbowl-planters, shelves, baby carriages, wheelchairs, cribs and even lamps and lampshades were made. The wicker was shellacked, stained or painted.

Today, collectors pay the highest prices for wicker with elaborate curves and intricate designs. They also favor the unusual.

Unique furniture from locally salvaged trees

When the massive elm tree outside Joan Murray’s Madison Park home came down with Dutch elm disease, Murray and husband Mark organized a wake so the neighborhood could mourn the leafy, 100-foot giant boasting 120 rings. (They counted.)

But Joan Murray didn’t have a plan for the tree’s afterlife — not until Jim Newsom showed up and proposed one.

Newsom owns Urban Hardwoods, a Seattle furniture company that does custom work and builds elegant tables and other pieces using mostly locally salvaged trees. Back in 2003, when Newsom explained his company to the Murrays, he asked for the elm, offering in exchange a custom-built table. The Murrays agreed. Their 4-foot round table now sits near a window overlooking the spot where the tree stood. The rest of the tree went to two homes on Orcas Island, while some lumber is still waiting to be made into tables.

“It’s like good karma,” Joan Murray said. “I love that we can sit at that table and remember the tree

Fast Piece of Furniture

Jeff Nelson likes to sit down. That’s a natural position for a drummer, sure, but it’s also the only theory that explains why the former member of the High Back Chairs is now drumming for Toledo, Ohio’s Fast Piece of Furniture. Or maybe it’s just that he likes singer and guitarist Tony Lowe’s dusky voice and jangly songs, which coaxed the D.C. legend out of retirement. Adventures in Contentment, the group’s debut, doesn’t confine itself to the living room, touching on garage rock (“Can I Believe in You?”), bedroom psychedelia (“Miles From Nowhere”), and chamber pop (“Out of Time”). Underpinning it all is an appealing sense of wide-eyed melancholy and optimism despite all evidence to the contrary. Lowe’s tales of relationships that have gone wrong, are going wrong, or almost certainly will implode if you give him half a chance can get a little claustrophobic, but his band’s gentle power pop sure sits easy. Fast Piece of Furniture performs with Everyone But Pete and cobbler at 9:30 p.m. at Iota Club & Cafe, 2832 Wilson Blvd., Arlington. $10. (703) 522-8340.

Antique or not, small furniture is what she seeks

Marcia Wilk has a soft spot for small things — especially small furniture. She has about a dozen pieces spread throughout her Grosse Pointe Park home.

“It’s not dollhouse or child-size it’s in between,” she explains. “It was made by carpenters and woodworkers as a craft to show off their work. It didn’t really serve a purpose, although many people mistakenly think these items were salesmen’s samples.”

Wilk has been collecting the wooden pieces about 20 years. She purchased her first piece — a small icebox — many years ago while living in her native Pennsylvania. Since then, she’s picked up chairs, dressers, desks and other examples.

Old-world quality furniture that’s built in Windsor Heights

New furniture is easy to find. Antiques aren’t exactly scarce. But some people want a chair or a sideboard to perfectly match a roomful of antiques, or a chest of drawers that exists only vaguely in their imaginations, and those are the customers Kyle Smith is looking for.

Smith started his woodworking career as an Iowa farm boy near Audubon. At 28, he operates a start-up business, Smith Co. Artisans, out of his home in Windsor Heights. In between, he studied the craft of furniture making at the University of Rio Grande - it’s not where you think; it’s in Ohio - and worked with period furniture makers in Philadelphia.

Walk into his house and you’re surrounded by wonderful examples of Smith’s talent. Many pieces feature hand-carved details defining them as the work of a man who has thoroughly developed his skills. He’s in the midst of making and installing a fireplace surround, complete with carved flowers, as part of transforming the main part of the first floor of his home into a showroom.

Good wood on antiques

One place to appreciate the real, rare red sandalwood furniture of the Ming and Qing dynasties is to visit the China Red Sandalwood Museum.

Almost 20,000 visitors took advantage of free entry to the museum on May 18, International Museum Day, where they enjoyed the genuine antique furniture and reproductions.

Squatting in front of a Ming-Dynasty cabinet, Gao Jianhua, a furniture enthusiast from Shandong Province, used a magnifying glass to study the detailed patterns carved on the furniture. “Ming furniture features flat backs decorated with straight or curved wooden patterns and is sometimes embedded with marbles,” Gao said.

Instant Credit Card Approval Online

What do we mean when we say an instant credit card? As most of the internet surfers should already have noticed, many credit card companies operating online and offline for that matter, announce they can offter the best credit card online, even with instant approval if you apply for it on their website. Some people think that this means they can instantly download a copy of a card like waving a magic stick and start to purchase with it immideately. Let's sort out some confusion here. Many credit card websites can approve your application instantly, which in most cases means within a few minutes. But that doesn't mean you can print out your card and run to your local Wal-Mart or Target or wherever and immedeately shop. Of course you can shop, but not with your newly approved card, because you have not received it yet.

Though the approval procedure only takes minutes, you have to be patient and wait for your card. This will be sent in the mail, and it will take a few days. Now, the nice thing with applying online for a card is that you know if you are approved for it or not within a fairly short time, and I would think that this is the best thing for people to know, or like the saying goes "those who are waiting for something good don't wait in vain"

Compared to the old-fashioned way of doing it, returning the snail mail offer for a credit card, waiting days or even weeks for the bank or credit card company to process it and run your credit, and finally waiting for them to send out your new credit card, the online way is far more convenient and fast. Another advantage of doing the application online is that it also gives you a fantastic option to compare the cost of credit offered from a lot of card companies.

There are certain limitations however on who is eligible for an Instant online credit card approval. Instant approval credit card offers are targeted to - or at least originally meant to be for - people with good credit records. However, there are ways to go around this and sometimes this might be pure luck. What I mean is, sometimes the card company you apply to, may not be able to access your credit records for some reasons. But this is an exception. The competition on the credit market is so high today, that some companies are willing to tow the line pretty far to get customers. The bottom line is that even if your credit history is not so good, you can obtain an instantly approved credit card. So regardless to what your credit rating is, there is no reason not to apply.

If you want to apply for an instant approval of a credit card online, go to the web and search for instant credit card approval an you'll have more than enough websites to choose among, giving you the opportunity to compare the offers from different sites with respect to the cost of credit. Then you will be able to find the best deal. Good luck!

Terje Brooks Ellingsen is a writer and internet publisher. He runs the website 1st-In-Loan.net Terje gives advice and helps people with personal financial issues like applying online for an instant credit card and getting rid of bank debt.

Meet an India payments specialist (google adsense)

We recently sat down with Amrita Kamat, a payments specialist in our Hyderabad office, to find out more about payments in India.

When you're not at work, where would one find you?

In gaming parlors -- I love gaming! Counter-Strike is one of my current favorites. Running around and fighting opponents (while still sitting on the comfort of my sofa and sipping a hot mug of coffee) is the highlight of my weekend. I also love the outdoors, trekking, and sports like badminton and basketball.

There are a few payment-related issues specific to India. What tips do you have for Indian publishers?

I have a 5-point Mantra for payments for Indian publishers:

  1. Enter an accurate, complete address – I'd recommend updating your address in this way:

  2. Choose INR checks over USD checks – This will reduce the bank charges levied (if any) to convert the dollar checks to Indian rupees. Also, the INR checks will be easy to process.

  3. Set a self-hold – If you've reached $100 in unpaid earnings and would like to get paid once in 2 months or once every 6 months, we have an option to set a self-hold. Accumulate your earnings and receive a bigger check in the future. Don't forget that you'll need to remove the hold before the 15th of the month to be paid in that month.

  4. Use Secured Express Delivery – For tension-free delivery of your hard-earned money, try our Secured Express Delivery option, which will cost you US$25 for the DHL charges -- the check will be delivered at your doorstep within 10 days.

  5. Understand your payment cycle - Please go through the Payments Demo to understand when payments are processed. It's an 11-minute demo that is well worth your time!
Why do checks and PINs take longer to reach Indian publishers? What are the other options?

This can happen because of incorrect mailing addresses and the postal service. While nothing much can be done about the postal service at this time, I'd again recommend that you update your physical address -- an accurate house number and/or house name can make a big difference to how a postman will locate your house. If you're relocating, feel free to place a self-hold on your account until you've completed the relocation process. Please ensure that your address is updated before the 15th, and the address doesn’t exceed the 35-character limit in each line. Finally, the only alternative for receiving checks right now is to choose Secured Express Delivery checks over Standard Delivery checks.

Any weekend plans?

This weekend I am off to Bangalore to catch up with a few friends. We've planned a bicycle trip to Nandi Hills for a picnic. In the evening, we intend to make good use of the new telescope one of my friends acquired recently. Isn’t star-gazing on a Sunday evening an ideal way to end an eventful weekend?

Whats Google AdSense?

AdSense may be one of the fastest and easiest ways to monetize traffic to your web site whether you have products or services for sale or you simply provide free content to your visitors.

Simply stated, Google AdSense enables website operators to place some code on their site that connects to Googles ad server content database and pulls keyword-relevant advertising onto the web pages. The webmaster gets paid a percentage of the fee that Google receives from the advertiser every time a visitor clicks on an ad. There is no charge for the webmaster to participate in AdSense. All costs are covered by the advertiser who participates in the AdSense sister program called AdWords.

Googles sends out digital robots which use proprietary algorithms to parse the host web page and analyze the content in an effort to determine what keywords are relevant. It reports its findings back to Googles ad server which then serves ads matching those keywords. Given that the entire process is automated, the ad robots do a pretty good job of getting the advertising content right most of the time.

The History of Google AdSense

Google AdSense has its roots in the old Google Content-Targeted Advertising program which they introduced back in March of 2003. Although this program was similar in concept to AdSense, there was no automated way of participating. Each webmaster negotiated a deal directly with Google, and websites that served less than 20 million page views per month were not welcome to participate.

As Google grew, they began to see how much money they were leaving on the table by excluding the smaller sites, which greatly outnumbered the sites serving over 20 million hits that were willing to serve other peoples ads. Their answer to that problem was AdSense which has no minimum traffic requirements and is open to all sites meeting Googles content and decency requirements.

How much can you make running Google AdSense?

The answer to that question depends upon three factors:

1. How much traffic your site draws
2.How many visitors click on your ads
3.How much those ads pay per generated click

With some ads paying as much as $5 or more, its possible that you can generate a serious income with AdSense. There are relatively well documented cases of some people earning as much as $500 per DAY and more. Numbers like that are rare exceptions however. Even so, there is no reason why you cant earn somewhere around $1,000 per month, or more, once you get the hang of it.

How to get started using Google AdSense

Make a visit to Googles AdSense Site (https://www.google.com/adsense/) and sign up. Make sure that you read their Acceptable Use Policy and that you follow their content requirements. Google has their own AdSense Police who will have no problem booting you out of the program if you fail to walk the line.
